The Gap & The Gain

The Gap & The Gain

The Gap and The Gain is synonymous to “peaks and valleys.”

When you’re at your peak, everything is going well!

When you’re in the valley, it may seem like nothing can go right.

Gap thinking is when you are never satisfied with where you are now. You may have achieved great success, or set a new PR in the gym, but you’re still unhappy.

You are in the gap when you compare yourself to an ideal.

“I should be…”

“It doesn’t matter because I should be…”

You are always chasing happiness, because when you are in the gap, happiness is ‘out there’ and is never ‘here.’

Ultimately, the gap mindset stops growth. You are always chasing that ideal, and the closer you get to it, you’ll still never get there because it will never be enough.

You are in the gap when:

  • You measure yourself against an ideal
  • If you focus on what you lack, you lose what you have
  • If you feel like you’re in the negative
“How do I get out of the gap?”

Happiness is not something you pursue.

Happiness is not something in the future.

Happiness is where you start, not where you finish.

You only compare yourself to where you started, not where you “should be.”

To get out of the gap and into the gain, you must measure backwards.

You can only connect the dots looking backwards.

Look back to the very first step you took when you joined Hustle One.

Were you working out as consistently as you are now?

Did you feel better than how you feel now?

Have you gained more strength and confidence than what you had on Day 1?

Is your life more enriched because of the time, the consistency, and the dedication you have made to yourself for health and fitness?

Always measure backwards, and you will always find success and happiness.

And even if you are ‘not quite there yet,’ that doesn’t mean you haven’t made leaps and bounds since day 1.

When you’re in the gain, you are fully here, you are where you want to be, and you are playing the long game.

In health and fitness, there is really no end destination. (Sorry to burst your bubble!)

You will always want to be stronger, you will always want to lift more, you will always want to lose more wight or change your body composition, and you will always want to chase the next goal when you accomplish your current one.

But, in health and fitness there is always a starting point.

The starting point is where you measure from.

The starting point is where you see just how far you’ve come.

Strategies for getting out of the gap and into the gain:
  • Stop comparing and practice gratitude
  • Be grateful of where you are
  • Measure progress backwards from the gain perspective
